THE STUBBORN GIRL

By Katherine Givens

Originally published in Cats with Thumbs.

Her breaths are short.

Her thoughts are long.

She lives through the ups and downs,

And yet she’ll never escape

The trap she is in.

She cries at the rejection,

And yet she pushes herself

Back into its wake.

She seeks peace from it all,

But then the doubt

Weaves itself through her mind.

God Almighty, she’s stuck in this rut.

And yet, and yet,

She digs her heels in

And keeps on dreaming.
