Character Interview with Barbara Davies from Between Land and Sea + GIVEAWAY!!!

Today we have Barbara Davies, the heroine from Between Land and Sea by Joanne Guidoccio, on the blog! Please be certain to welcome this spectacular character!

1.      Katherine: How would you describe yourself?

Barbara: For the first twenty-three years of my life, I was Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom, grand-daughter of chief elder Annabella. Each year, since turning eighteen, I was crowned Most Beautiful Mermaid—a tribute to my long, wavy auburn tresses, mesmerizing green eyes, and magnificent tail. All that changed when I swam ashore one evening and met Andrew Bradley III. I fell madly in lust—I now know that wasn’t love—and gave up my tail for him. In a fit of rage, Annabella chopped off my hair, aged me thirty years, and gave me twenty extra pounds to carry. Andrew was horrified and abandoned me on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England, leaving with only a suitcase and a magic tablet. I now face the job of reinventing myself.

2.      Katherine: What is your greatest aspiration?

Barbara: If you had asked me this question when Andrew first abandoned me, I would have wished for my easy, comfortable mermaid life. The more time I spend on earth, however, the more I realize the necessity of blooming where I am planted. In this case, Carden—a small town just west of Toronto. Having a magic tablet with online mermaid support definitely helps. Right now, my goals are motivated by anger toward Annabella and my mother Mirabella, who abandoned me four days after my birth. I am determined to demonstrate that I can survive and thrive without my spectacular Bella looks and powers.

3.      Katherine: Would you prefer a quiet sanctuary or a crowded gathering?

Barbara: My Bella nature craves the spotlight, but fifty-three-year-old Barbara Davies is more comfortable in small, intimate gatherings. I would describe myself as an extraverted introvert. From what I gather, a growing tribe on Earth.

4.      Katherine: What is your favorite pastime?

Barbara: Thankfully, I have retained my storytelling talents. In the kingdom, I inspired the other mermaids and mermen with my stories. As a career counselor and corporate trainer, I enjoy motivating boomer women with my speeches and excerpts from my upcoming book, It’s Your Time. To unwind, I cook and bake.

5.      Katherine: What would you say is your most likeable characteristic?

Barbara: I am a good listener.

6.      Katherine: Do you have any hidden secrets? You can tell me. I won’t go and share it with others. *Chuckles*

Barbara: I am keeping my mermaid origins a secret from the humans. Only Gillian and Kendra, ex-mermaids from the Mediterranean kingdom, know and share my secret.

7.      Katherine: Who is the love of your life?

Barbara: Sigh! For one disastrous week, I thought it was Andrew. Now, I have two men in my life—Graham Scott and Stewart Tobin. I will have to decide very soon…

8.      Katherine: Do you remember when you first met Graham and Stewart?

Barbara: I literally fell into Graham’s life. As I was leaving the Carden Public Library, I tripped on a few stairs and Graham rushed to help me. Afterward, he invited me out for coffee, and our friendship blossomed.

When I visited Gillian at her condo in Chicago, she introduced me to Stewart. The attraction was instantaneous, and I found myself unable to speak.

9.      Katherine: If Graham and Stewart were to describe you in one word, what would it be?

Barbara: Graham thinks I’m comfortable, a nice addition to his well-ordered life in Carden. Stewart would describe me as challenging. And therein lies my dilemma. As Dr. Brené Brown is fond of saying: You can have courage or comfort. But you can’t have both.

After giving up her tail for an international banker, Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom is aged beyond recognition. The horrified banker abandons her on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England, leaving her to face a difficult human journey as a plain and practically destitute fifty-three-year-old woman.

With the help of a magic tablet and online mermaid support, Isabella evolves into the persona of Barbara Davies. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, among them former mermaids, supportive and not-so-supportive women, deserving and undeserving men, and several New Agers.

Isabella stumbled as she got out of bed and tried to balance herself on the stumps that now served as permanent legs. She willed herself not to cry as she recalled the magnificent tail that had been the envy of the Mediterranean kingdom. Her mother and grandmother had also been blessed with the same tail. Now only Annabella held this birthright.

She heard her stomach growl and thought longingly of her favorite kelp dish. She closed her eyes and visualized the steaming goodness that would satisfy her hunger. And then she remembered that she could no longer manifest her desires.

No more powers. No more comfort and ease.

Her lips trembled as she looked about the small, neat room filled with large wooden pieces and smaller metallic ones. She tried to move one of the larger pieces and then gave up in frustration. Andrew had promised her a beautiful home with servants, and now she must live this life of ordinary humans.

The flickering of a green light caught her attention. She approached and noticed the tablet lying on one of the wooden surfaces. It was blinking at her. Tentatively, she touched the green light. The blinking stopped and a smiling face materialized.

“Greetings, Isabella. I am Lisa738. Annabella has asked me to guide you through your orientation.”

Isabella frowned and tried to recall her connection to this lowly mermaid from the Numbers class.

Guidoccio 001In high school, I dabbled in poetry, but decided to wait until I had more life experiences before writing a novel. The original plan was to get a general arts degree and take a few years off to travel and write. Instead, I gave in to my practical Italian side and obtained degrees in mathematics and education.

While I experienced many satisfying moments during my teaching career, I never found the time and energy to write. In 2008, I took advantage of early retirement. Slowly, a writing practice emerged, and my articles and book reviews started appearing in newspapers, magazines and online.

My debut novel, Between Land and Sea, a paranormal romance about a middle-aged mermaid, was released by Soul Mate Publishing on September 17, 2013.

I live and write in Guelph, Ontario.

Where to find Joanne…
