The Fates

Clotho unravels the spindle

the moment a screaming child

emerges from the womb.

Laachesis squints to take

the measurement

of the newborn’s life.

Atropos waves her scissors

before carelessly cutting

the thread.

Will the child live

to a ripe old age?

Will the child find

fulfillment or tragedy?

Will the child be

a hero or a beggar?

With the hands

of the spinners of fate,

deniers of dreams,

and grave maidens

making such decisions,

the child will live a life

of hardships and severity.
